People on the Move – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Appointed

The Board of Directors is pleased to appoint Chuck Burk (Baron Charles de Bourbon, OL) as the SCA Inc. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.

Charles works in DEI for a large online tech retail company where he is responsible for leading a team that works with senior leaders, cross-organizationally, to create inclusive customer experiences as well as developing and delivering DEI training content for leaders. His personal expertise is using data to convince leaders to make change on behalf of marginalized communities leveraging almost two decades of experience in customer advocacy. Charles has organizational DEI certifications from Cornell University and the University of South Florida. He is currently working on a specialization in DEI Organizational Strategy through the University of California, Santa Cruz. Charles lives in Washington with his husband, Chad, and their two puppies Haku and Kiki. He identifies as Queer and his pronouns are he/him.

Charles de Bourbon joined the SCA in 1994 when he was a junior in High School. He started in the Barony of Bordermarch in Ansteorra where he played for almost 10 years before moving to Meridies, Gleann Abhann, and finally An Tir where he has lived for the last 12 years. He is a member of the Order of the Laurel and a former landed Baron of the Barony of Axemoor in Gleann Abhann. Charles’ areas of interest in the SCA are largely focused on the Arts and Sciences – specifically in European Fashion of the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. He has held local and kingdom offices as well as creating event concepts and running events. He has also been known to run the occasional feast.  Charles was a member of the An Tir’s DEI council, and he is currently the Chamberlain for his local group.

The Corporate DEI Officer is responsible for the ongoing development of plans and education to further promote and embed diversity, equity and inclusion for the Society. The DEI Officer leads policy and educational changes but they are not alone in this work. Creating an atmosphere where all people feel welcome and valued in the SCA is the responsibility of all participants. The appointment term is 3 years.
