President, SCA Inc.
The Board of Directors of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. is currently accepting applications for the position of President of the SCA, Inc. This is a salaried position requiring 30-40 hours per week. The office hours are flexible, as availability for evening calls may be required.
Position Requirements and Responsibilities:
- The President is the principal spokesperson for the SCA, Inc. This officer is the principal liaison between the SCA, Inc. and outside authorities. Specifically, they are responsible for communications between outside professionals such as attorneys, accountants, insurance representatives, for law enforcement, government agencies, other organizations, and claimants against the SCA, Inc. Approves official interactions with outside media sources when required.
- Provides inspirational leadership and direction to all executives and ensures the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization; establish effective decision-making processes that will enable the SCA, Inc. to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives.
- Serves as the point of contact for all legal and law enforcement inquiries and communications. Responsible for coordinating with SCA legal, IT, and other SCA offices to provide documentation required for legal actions. May be required to provide depositions and affidavits.
- Works with the Vice President of Corporate Operations to coordinate much of the day-to-day modern operation of the Corporation. Services as the immediate point of contact for all Society and Corporate officers. The President currently supervises the Corporate DEIB, Communications, Marketing officers, and the President’s Special Project Deputy Officer.
- Works with the Executive Assistant to maintain rosters of Officer Warrants and timely post job openings when needed. Responsible for ensuring all interviews for Society and Corporate positions are scheduled properly after consultation with the Board and pertinent officers.
- Works closely with the Society Seneschal and usually participates in the Society Seneschal meetings with the Kingdom Seneschals. Is the primary point of contact for Kingdom Seneschals on all modern legal issues. Assists in handling special matters when the Society Seneschal cannot due to a conflict.
- Executes contracts necessary to properly conduct the SCA’s business and may delegate similar responsibilities. Monitors, stores, and negotiates Affiliate Agreements with Board oversight.
- In conjunction with the Corporate Treasurer ensures that the flow of funds allows the SCA Inc. to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its mission and that those funds are allocated properly to reflect present needs and future potential.
- Cultivates a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensures open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals.
- Advises the Board of Directors on areas of corporate governance and policy issues.
- Currently the President reviews and approves site contracts in accordance with SCA corporate policy. Additionally monitors and audits procedures and departments at large events as needed (Gulf Wars, Pennsic, etc.).
- Responsible along with the Vice President of Corporate Operations for interviewing and hiring office staff as needed with approval from the Board.
- Responsible for drafting and submitting four Quarterly Reports to the Board, four Post-Board Meeting Reports to the membership, and ensuring the creation and publication of a public year-end report.
- The President may be assigned other duties by the Board.
General Requirements:
- The President must be available for the four quarterly Board meetings, typically held over a Friday and Saturday or a Saturday and Sunday. These meetings may be held via videoconference or in person. In-person meetings require travel, typically on a Thursday and Sunday. In addition, the President must be available for conference call meetings of the Board four to twelve times a year, typically on weekday evenings, and meetings or calls with officers or directors on an as-needed basis.
- The President must have the ability to travel when required by the Board or for legal matters.
- Management experience working with both volunteers and employees required.
- Prior nonprofit experience ideal; management of a global or multisite organization preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work independently to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Experience in a modern business setting, organizational ability and problem-solving skills are a must. Experience in a modern non-profit organization and prior experience at the Corporate or Society level of the SCA are desirable, but not required.
- As a great deal of the Board’s business occurs via the Internet, familiarity and basic skills with a computer, MS Office software (specifically Microsoft Word and Excel), and e-mail are required. The successful applicant must have reliable access to the Internet.
- Good working knowledge of current SCA Corporate and Society documents required.
