The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA) is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Volunteer Communications Officer to join our corporate team.
This key role will help guide and strengthen how we tell the SCA’s story—supporting both our internal community and public outreach. The Communications Officer will oversee communication strategy (including social media), official messaging, and content coordination across the Known World, helping ensure a clear, engaging, and inclusive voice for the Society.
Location: Remote / Flexible within SCA territories
Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week
Reports To: SCA Inc. Board of Directors/President of the SCA
Position Overview:
The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA), a nonprofit dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts, skills, and traditions of pre-17th-century history, is seeking a volunteer Communications Officer. This role will lead the development and delivery of engaging communications across our digital platforms, with a focus on celebrating the diversity of historical activities and communities within the SCA. You will oversee both social media and broader corporate communications to strengthen outreach, transparency, and member engagement. This office receives a small stipend in recognition of the time commitment.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications Leadership
- Contribute to long-term communications planning and calendar development
- Liaise with Corporate and SCA officers to source content and coordinate efforts
- Advise on crisis communications and public responses when needed
- Champion inclusive, historically respectful storytelling across all platforms
Corporate Communications & Messaging
- Draft and distribute official announcements and press releases
- Ensure consistency of tone and messaging across communications from SCA, Inc.
- Support Kingdoms, officers, and branches in aligning with broader communications strategy
- Maintain and update messaging documents, public relations materials, and official bios
- Assist in preparing Board-level communication updates to the populace
Social Media & Digital Engagement
- Develop and execute a social media strategy that highlights the SCA’s mission, events, and educational resources
- Curate and share content that reflects the depth and breadth of historical recreation within the society
- Schedule and manage content on platforms such as Facebook, Discord, Instagram, YouTube, and others
- Monitor engagement and respond to comments, fostering a respectful and inclusive online community
- Track analytics to inform ongoing improvements
Team Management
- Provide leadership and management to a team of volunteer officer deputies.
- Oversee functions including marketing, social media, video production, content creation, and community management.
- Guide and coordinate the efforts of deputies to ensure cohesive and effective communication strategies.
- Align communication strategies with the organization’s goals.
- Foster a collaborative environment.
- Empower the team to create engaging and impactful content.
- Enhance the organization’s digital presence.
- Strengthen community engagement
Skills & Experience:
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with an understanding of diverse historical narratives
- Experience managing communication strategy, policy, social media and crafting strategic digital content
- Familiarity with nonprofit or volunteer-run organizations preferred
- Knowledge of or involvement in the SCA strongly preferred
- Comfortable with digital tools like Canva, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, or similar platforms
- Able to manage multiple deadlines and collaborate remotely with volunteers
