The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. is seeking candidates for the position of Editor for Tournaments Illuminated. This is a part-time stipend position with a three-year warranted term of service.
The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the publication of the quarterly SCA magazine, Tournaments Illuminated.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Editor include, but are not limited to the following:
- Working with the TI Art Director, staff and authors to produce the quarterly magazine on schedule;
- Answering queries in a timely, courteous, and professional manner;
- Developing and maintaining relationships with authors and other content providers;
- Developing manuscripts with authors based on the audience of Tournaments Illuminated, general readability and (where appropriate) historical accuracy;
- Developing and working with a volunteer staff of reviewers (TI Review Panel);
- Recruiting (as needed), overseeing, working and communicating with column contributors;
- Developing new coverage areas and varieties of content that reflect the interests and priorities of TI readers and the wider SCA community;
- Developing a program for close communication with Kingdom representatives to help determine interest areas and contributors;
- Establishing and managing a team to support TI ventures, such as gathering and disseminating information, promoting the publication, and SCA community outreach for reader involvement;
- Reaching out to potential subscribers and authors and generally raising awareness of TI and SCA publications via virtual events, podcasts, social media, and other online opportunities;
- Manage the Tournaments Illuminated Team of volunteers and deputies;
- Assess and meet the diverse needs of the readership, as TI is meant for all members and participants, at all skill and experience levels;
- Quarterly Reports to the Board of Directors through the Publications Manager.
This position requires approximately 10+ hours per week, except during the two to four weeks prior to publication, when more time is spent putting an issue together. Qualifications for the position include excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work independently to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, strong computer skills, ability to organize a staff, and familiarity with SCA publications and social media programs and platforms. Professional experience in a modern editing environment and prior experience in an SCA Chronicler position are desirable, but not required. Successful candidates for this position must have easy access to phone, mail, internet, and reliable e-mail service. An applicant must be a paid member of the Society and must be able to meet publication and reporting deadlines in a timely manner.
